Before you buy
Will Fiver do the job?
Four questions people ask before they hand over £5, answered without the hedging.
Can I use Fiver on a tablet?
Yes, as long as the tablet has mobile data built in and can take an eSIM. That means an iPad with mobile (the models with a SIM tray or eSIM), a cellular Galaxy Tab, or a similar tablet from another maker. Wi-Fi-only tablets have no mobile side at all, so there is nothing for the eSIM to install into. If you are not sure which one you have, buy it anyway: if you can't install it, we refund you in full as long as it hasn't been activated.
Not sure? Buy it and try. If the eSIM won't install and you haven't activated it, we refund you in full, no quibble.
Does Fiver support 5G?
Yes. Where there is 5G coverage and your phone or tablet supports it, you get 5G. Where there is not, you get 4G, which is more than quick enough for calls, maps, messaging and streaming. One thing worth knowing: faster speeds make it easier to get through the 5GB without noticing, so if you are trying to stretch it, 4G is your friend.
Would Fiver be strong enough for a video call?
Yes. A video call over a normal mobile connection uses somewhere around 200MB to 350MB an hour, so 5GB is roughly fifteen hours of video calling before you run dry. Voice-only calls over data use far less, around 20MB an hour. The quality you get depends on the signal where you are standing, exactly as it does on your usual SIM.
| Type of call | Data used | What 5GB covers |
|---|---|---|
| WhatsApp or FaceTime video | About 250 MB an hour | Roughly 20 hours of calls |
| Zoom or Teams video | About 350 MB an hour | Around 14 hours of meetings |
| Voice-only calls over data | About 20 MB an hour | Well over 200 hours of talking |
These are rough guides rather than promises. Apps use more data on a big screen and less when the signal is poor.
Can I use Fiver for WhatsApp calling?
Yes. WhatsApp voice and video calls travel over data rather than the phone network, so they work over Fiver just as they do over your normal data. The same goes for FaceTime, Messenger, Teams and Zoom. Ordinary phone calls and texts are a different thing — they need a phone number, and Fiver does not come with one, so those stay on the SIM you already use.
The bits that apply to all of it
- Data only. No phone number, so ordinary calls and texts stay on your usual SIM.
- United Kingdom only. It will not connect abroad.
